Removal
You want every tree to be healthy and long-lived, but sometimes tree removal service is necessary.
When Should I Remove A Tree?
Nothing living lasts forever, trees included.
So how do we know when to remove a tree? Common reasons include:
- The tree is dead or dying
- A tree becomes in danger of falling, because of age or disease
- It’s crowding or causing harm to more desirable trees
- Storms damaged the trees beyond repair
- Trees are too close to a house or utility lines
- New construction may require removal
What About Tree Protection Laws?
From Abilene to West Lake Hills, over 50 Texas cities have laws to protect trees. It’s easy to forget that trees are part of the public good, even if they are on an individual’s property. They clean the air, absorb rain, and help prevent runoff leading to floods.
As cities recognize the value of trees, they have passed laws to protect them. These ordinances cover not only removing trees but also damaging their root systems.
While these statutes sometimes frustrate builders, developers, and homeowners who want to cut down a tree, they add beauty and enjoyment to Central Texas.

Which Trees are Protected?
If your city has a tree ordinance, it may be like Austin’s. Protected Trees in Austin are from nine to 23 inches in diameter. Those 24 inches or more, measured four and a half feet from the ground, are Heritage Trees. These ordinance vary by city, for example The City of Westlake Hills’ tree ordinance protects trees starting at six inches in diameter.
You can’t cut Protected and Heritage Trees down without a permit issued by the City. A Heritage Tree Care Certified arborist can examine your tree and complete the Tree Ordinance Review Application for you.
Check your city’s land development code for more information before cutting down trees.
